Get Free Prayer Explained
Why should we confess?
When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy on me, my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity, I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin. Psalm 32:3-5 NIV
In confession, we acknowledge our problems to God. We speak to him about what happened, our pains and shame, our fears for the consequence, or even why we sinned. This is a direct conversation we have with God.
Our conversation with God is not one way. God is not deaf. In fact, he already saw what happened or what is in your heart. And he has been waiting for you to talk to him about it. Then finally you come and want to have a chat. Then he responds – in both visible and invisible ways. When we read further down in the Psalm, we notice the change in the person’s prayer:
Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found, surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place, you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Psalm 32: 6-7 NIV
Why is it important to God that we go to him in confession?
Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight. Psalm 51:6
An dir allein habe ich gesündigt und übel vor dir getan. Psalm 51:6 Luther 2017
If I had a heated argument with my roommate or my spouse, or when I lied to my colleague or neighbors. Whom did I sin against? (the person). Has it ever occurred to you that when you sin, it hurts not only the people in your life, whether it’s your roommate, partner coworker or neighbors, it also hurts God? Think about that. (additional Bible verses: Genesis 6: 5-6, 1 Mose 6:5-6)
Just like a mother is happy when a child goes to her to apologize, God is very happy when we go to him to confess and to say we are sorry.
Why Should We Confess to Each Other?
And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well, the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. James 5:15-16 NIV
Sin is like cancer, the first step is to acknowledge that we are sick, and we want to go to the doctor to get healed. The second step is to get yourself to the hospital! And confessing to each other is like having someone go to the hospital with you. It takes courage, humility, and faith because it is now in the open – that someone else knows that you have cancer. Let me let you in on a secret, the person taking you to the hospital is also on his way to the hospital! He is also sick and needs healing. We are all in the same boat!
And now the healing may begin.
