God is My Spiritual Father and Mother

Our God is not an abstract, far-away divine being who is uninterested in our daily life. The Bible tells us that he is in fact, directly involved in taking care of our needs and in righting the wrongs. Our childhood experience with our parents and other authority figures tends to define our view of God. Sadly they are often skewed, leading us to distrust or fear God either as someone who is unloving or who is quick to judge and punish. To truly enjoy an intimate and joyous relationship with God, we must relearn God for who he really is. This Bible study identifies some characteristics of God showing him to be a caring parent who can be trusted.

Part I Who God to me as a Father and Mother

He is my Provider – he makes sure that I am well provided for

He is able to provide for all my basic needs. This includes food, clothing, and shelter.

Read Genesis 1: 29-30

When God created mankind, he also created food for them and the animals to eat.

Read Genesis 2: 2

Adam and Eve used leaves to clothe themselves because that was the only thing they knew how to do. God provided better clothing for them by taking an animal's skin to cover them. Only a loving father would do that!

Read Matthew 6:25-32

Jesus reminds us that if God our heavenly Father is the one who provides for the creatures, how much more would he be sure that we have what we need to eat and to clothe ourselves?

Do you really believe that God is the one who provides for all your needs? Or do you trust in yourself to take care of your everyday needs, or do you trust in God? Do you have anxiety about your future when it comes to finance? Take the time to thank God for being your provider, and be as specific as possible.

He is my Defender  he acts on my behalf - what I cannot do for myself

God is the Defender of the weak and vulnerable - he sees those who are not seen or feel abandoned by society.
