Week One Sin
Welcome to Get Free by Tobias Teichen
In John 10:10 Jesus promises to give us life to the full, a life of freedom. In the Garden of Eden, the serpent (sneak) deceived mankind with lies. We have since believed in lies – in our thoughts, about our sexuality, our finance or in friendships. Even in our relationship with God, we wonder, can I really trust God?
1:28 What is sin? Sin is missing the goal or the bullseye. (Ziel Verhelt).
3:20 Ephesians 4:27 says not to give the devil a foothold. The problem with sin is that it may start with something small – like getting irritated or annoyed, and we don’t feel like dealing with it or forgiving. A small 'dot' of undealt with sin then grows.
4:20 The circle representing sin or the impact of sin gets bigger – we become more bitter and angry, even to the point of affecting our physical health. We have pains and even get sick. Sin and its impact affect other areas of our hearts and our lives as well. Over time we become less and less able to live out the calling God has for our lives.
Would you like to hit the target for the beautiful life God has designed for you?
6:00 in the upcoming weeks we will learn to recognize the sins and their roots and learn to tools to deal with them. Romans 6:6-7 teaches that as a result of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, we, too, can die to our old selves, that is, our sins. And just as Jesus rose from the dead to a new life, we, too can be free from slavery of sin and live a new life.
6:45 – please see the diagram on the video. This is a process of exchange. We give up lies, illness, sin, shame, hardship, and rejection, and in return, we pick up the truth, healing, forgiveness, honesty, lightness, and acceptance.
These are the three steps we can take step to become free from sin and its influence in our lives. (Please see page 8 in your English Get Free booklet)
Step 1 Recognize – ask God what he wants to show you, look into the mirror of your heart – and see the roots of your bitterness (or wound, anger, shame, addiction, etc.)
8:33 Step2 Confess – God wants to not only forgive us but also to purify us by taking away the evil (and pain) in our hearts and by giving us a new start. For this process, it is important to speak out loud your confession and bring sins to the light. It is also very important to be both ACTIVE and SPECIFIC when you confess. Instead of saying, I would like to forgive, say I forgive. And give details on the person/situation you are forgiving. This makes sense as you are bringing something specific to the cross in exchange for something specific.
10: 57 Step 3 Take Steps in future behavior. We not only stop the wrong we are giving up but also fix the wrong. For example, you may ask for forgiveness for having stolen a car. What then will you do with the car? Your sin has affected another person, you now take the responsibility to reconcile or restore things. (He gives a beautiful example, perhaps someone can write it in the comment section)
In the upcoming weeks, we will learn to pray together, to get to know God better together, to love him more, and to live the life he wants to give us. Rock on!
